Australia to Introduce Age Verification in GTA Online, Red Dead Online, and More

17When the need to verify age in video games in The United Kingdom was first discussed, it became clear that this practice would soon spread to other countries. And now it has: starting Monday, residents of Australia will have to prove their age to play GTA Online, Red Dead Online, and by the end of the year the multiplayer of GTA 6.
From March 9, the new Age-Restricted Material Codes law comes into force there. Under the legislation, adult users must complete age verification to access multiplayer games rated 18+, pornographic materials, AI chatbots, and certain other services. If publishers and developers ignore the requirement, they could face fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars (about 33 million US dollars) for a single violation.
In the case of Rockstar Games, it has been known since last year how the verification process will look in GTA Online. What especially frustrates many users is that their personal data is sent not only to the government, but also to third-party companies that provide document verification services.
