A few days ago, a YouTube channel that had previously published interviews with former Rockstar Games employees (one of them) released a conversation with Mike York, who is already known to us. York worked as an animator at Rockstar New England from 2012 to 2017. Among other things, he was responsible for the animation of switching between the three protagonists in GTA 5 and creating realistic animals, such as the cougar, in RDR 2.
In a recent discussion, the former Rockstar spoke about the company’s internal culture, the Houser brothers, his work, and shared his thoughts on the upcoming GTA 6. One of the topics covered was the combat system in Grand Theft Auto V. Mike suggested slightly improving melee combat animations, specifically the side punch, taking inspiration from The Last of Us. However, his idea was not met with interest at the office, as “too much time and money had already been invested in meeting deadlines, and the studio simply wouldn’t take the risk of trying something new”. Apparently, Mr. York later realized he had said too much and requested that the video be taken down on Thursday, two days after its premiere.
