Alternative multiplayer mods in the Role Play category have proven incredibly popular and in demand. GTA 5, as a universal foundation for such entertainment, has brought some dividends even to Rockstar Games. But now the company wants much more than simply offering support or even taking mod creators under its wing. Rockstar has serious ambitions — to become a major player in the RP scene and move far beyond it.

According to various reports, the developers are working on Rockstar Online Modding Engine (ROME), also known by its working title Project Soundstage. This is a toolkit that allows extremely flexible and detailed modification of the game world, enabling the creation of unique user-generated content (UGC). It’s not just a replacement for FiveM and RedM (since RDR 2 also has RP servers, and the engine is broadly named after the studio, why not include Western-themed features too?). It’s a full-scale entry into the territory of games like Fortnite and Roblox (whose phenomenon R* has studied separately). Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead could together form an excellent metaverse.

Last week, a well-known insider discovered references to Project Soundstage in Rockstar server backend.

According to available information, ROME may be officially announced “soon”. However, Rockstar Online Modding Engine will still be tied to the release of GTA 6, which will be the first to integrate the new platform.
