GTA 6 Could Become More Expensive for Mexican Gamers

The Mexican authorities have accepted (though not yet fully approved) a proposal to raise taxes on sodas, beer, cigarettes, energy drinks, violent video games and online gaming — all under the pretext of promoting public health and reducing violence.

The Mexican flag in GTA 5.

Video games rated 18+ or Adults Only will see an 8% price increase. This means that GTA 6, Rockstar Games titles, and similar projects could soon become more expensive for Mexican gamers — a group that numbers over 72 million people.

The proposed law also includes the same additional 8% tax on microtransactions and all in-game purchases. This could affect not only future Online but also current GTA Online.

Such measures could seriously impact the local gaming market, potentially driving away part of the player base. And despite long-standing research showing that video games are not linked to real-world crime, these arguments clearly carry little weight when the government decides to dig deeper into citizens’ pockets.
