8Sleepwalking by Chain Gang Of 1974 is one of the most iconic tracks in GTA 5. It can be heard in the Official Trailer, during gameplay on the Radio Mirror Park, as the first song after completing Ending B, and also on the soundtrack album The Music of Grand Theft Auto V — Volume 1: Original Music.
The band’s frontman, whose real name is Kamtin Mohager, once shared the story of how their song ended up in GTA V. In 2011, the day before performing at the Lollapalooza festival, the musician was at a party when a gentleman tapped him on the shoulder and asked if he was Chain Gang Of 1974. At first, musician assumed it was simply a fan and was about to ask if he wanted a photo.
But the man introduced himself and said he worked at Rockstar Games. He also mentioned that everyone there were big fans of the band. He explained that they were working on a new project they couldn’t talk about yet, but they would love to connect. Mohager later admitted he was thankful for passing the business card he received to his manager.
A few months later, the singer’s manager called and said that a team from Rockstar was staying at the The Hollywood Roosevelt and wanted to meet. The company representatives — “super chill” guys, as Mohager described them — revealed what they were working on and said they wanted to include music by Chain Gang Of 1974. At that point, it wasn’t clear how extensive the collaboration would be. The artist played two demos that would later appear on his 2014 album Daydream Forever — Lola Suzanne and Sleepwalking. Initially, the developers liked the first track more.
A few more months passed. While the band was on tour and their bus had stopped to change its tires, the manager called again:
Don’t get too excited but they’ve been testing the commercial with Sleepwalking in it.About half a week later — literally three days before the official reveal on August 29, 2013 — another call came in:
They said they want Sleepwalking for all the commercials. They want it in gameplay and they want it as one of the ending songs.Without a doubt, this collaboration is what ultimately brought Chain Gang Of 1974 worldwide recognition.
