Ubisoft is going through tough times. Against the backdrop of restructuring, layoffs, and changes of the business model — which led to a drop in its stock price — the company announced the cancellation of several games, including the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, and the delay of several others, among them the Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake. This has already sparked anger among fans.

There was also no clarity around another Ubisoft franchise — Watch Dogs. However, well-known insider Tom Henderson reported that the game series is effectively dead.

Watch Dogs 1 was positioned as a competitor to GTA 5, with a strong focus on hacking, which became its key distinguishing feature. The game was set in Chicago. It was originally planned for release in fall 2013, but was delayed until May of the following year.

Watch Dogs 2 launched in 2016 with a brighter, more colorful presentation and a San Francisco setting, while Watch Dogs: Legion took players to London in 2020.

Despite the IP having been inactive for nearly six years, filming of the Watch Dogs movie adaptation wrapped on September 13, 2024. However, the film’s release date is still unknown.
