New in RDO: Cowboys vs Zombies, Robots, Swamp Folk & Murderers

Fresh content just dropped today for Red Dead Online. Yes, something similar came out earlier, but only as standalone missions or modes variations, not something that could be called a proper expansion. This time, we’re looking at what’s nearly a full-fledged themed DLC — Strange Tales of the West. And it’s only the first part, as marked in the title of the trailer — the first one in almost four years (the last was released back in October 2021 for the Halloween Pass 2). Which means there’s more to come. At first glance, given the mood and setting, it might seem like an October release would’ve been ideal. But more likely, the developers are reviving the game ahead of potential next-gen versions, rumors of which have been picking up this year (one, two).

Author Theodore Levin, familiar to us from RDR 2, doesn’t buy into the Wild West rumors — and sets out to investigate them to write a story. In four new missions, delivered via telegram (pick them up at the post office or your camp), players will face some bizarre phenomena.

Strange Tales of The Plague

Rumor has it that a strange illness is spreading in Armadillo, turning people into the walking dead. The heroes must collect several corpses in town for scientific research, avoiding infection and fighting off local cultists. This is the closest the series has come to an official nod to RDR: Undead Nightmare.

Strange Tales of Modern Science

A scientist claims to have created artificial life, now roaming near the Braithwaite Manor and killing off anyone curious enough to approach. The player’s task is to uncover the truth behind the experiment and destroy any hostile machines they encounter.

Strange Tales of The Bayou

Something unusual is happening in the swamps of Lagras, where you must fight the swamp people to get to the swamp creature.

Strange Tales of The Wilderness

A missing scientist had been reporting a gang of murderers operating in Tall Trees. The protagonists must locate and rescue a hostage, all while demonstrating survival skills: finding weapons, crafting gear, and hunting for food.
