GTA 6 Digest: Comments on Schedule Changes

The workweek kicked off with some fairly encouraging updates for everyone awaiting GTA 6. On May Day, another Borderlands 4 showcase took place as part of the State of Play event, but even half a day earlier it was already known that the game’s release was being moved from September 23 to the 12th.
Naturally, this was quickly linked to the rights holder’s plans to launch Grand Theft Auto VI in late fall — supposedly to create a slightly longer gap between major releases. However, there were also suspicions that the earlier date was aimed at avoiding direct competition with another big title, Marathon by Bungie. Still, Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, stated that the change was solely due to confidence in the quality of their product, and had nothing to do with the release of other titles.
And yesterday, the big news broke. It was immediately commented on by Strauss Zelnick, head of Take-Two.
We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations. While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence. As we continue to release our phenomenal pipeline, we expect to deliver a multi-year period of growth in our business and enhanced value for our shareholders.
Shareholders responded to the delay, and although T2 record-breaking stock took a small hit — losing just under $20 per share. The company’s position remains quite strong.

Journalist Jason Schreier, who had previously prepped everyone for such a turn of events (one, two), shared some insider info: at Rockstar no one actually believed that GTA 6 would launch this fall.

Nobody I’ve talked to at Rockstar has believed Fall 2025 was a real window for a very long time now. Too much work, not enough time, and what appears to be a real desire from management to avoid brutal crunch. GTA VI slipping to 2026 has seemed inevitable for months if not longer
