Yesterday in Boston at PAX East 2025, not only was the gameplay of Mafia: The Old Country showcased. The developers spoke about their creation, and at the same time, all the key information surfaced. The release date was announced, system requirements revealed, covers and two new screenshots published, pre-orders with price tags went live on the official website, and various bonuses were disclosed.

The gameplay trailer probably showed everything the game has to offer: gunfights and knife combat, driving cars and riding horses, the combat system and stealth mechanics. The release date, which had leaked online earlier, has been confirmed — August 8, 2025, just three months away.
More footage can be seen in additional videos, where Hangar 13 developers explained why they chose early 1900s Sicily as the setting, instead of the usual American metropolis. They brought it to life using the Unreal Engine 5, while the characters were created with MetaHuman technology.
For everyone interested, it’s important to know that this Mafia prequel will not feature an open world. The developers are focusing on crafting a more deeply developed narrative, aiming to give players the feeling of watching a classic gangster film.

The game’s linear structure and relatively short length help explain its modest price — especially notable amid recent price hikes. The Standard Edition costs $50, €50, or £45, whether you’re buying it on Steam, the PlayStation Store, or the Xbox Store.

The Deluxe Edition (available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S) is priced at $60 and includes the following items:
  • Full Base Game;
  • Padrino Pack:
    • Lupara Speciale Shotgun,
    • Vendetti Speciale Pistol,
    • Immortale Charm,
    • Padrino Outfit,
    • Stiletto Speciale Knife,
    • Eckhart Speciale Limousine,
    • Cosimo Horse and Accessories;
  • Gatto Nero Pack:
    • Bodeo Nero Pistol,
    • Velocità Charm,

There’s also a special bonus available for pre-orders:

    • Lupara Charm,
    • Soldato Outfit,
    • Tesoro Horse and Accessories.

Those who simply register on the 2K platform are promised a little something as well:

Conclusion

Mafia: The Old Country looks stunning and genuinely intriguing — but something feels off. During the premiere, it became hard to shake the feeling that, instead of delivering a full-fledged fourth entry, fans are getting a shorter prequel — perhaps due to a more modest budget compared to today’s big titles. It’s entirely possible that Hangar 13 wanted to develop Mafia 4, but higher-ups at 2K and Take-Two didn’t allocate sufficient funding for a major project. Now, the American studio may be trying to prove it can be trusted to carry the franchise forward.

No open world to explore, no collector’s edition, not even 4K screenshots. Of course, no one expected anything on the level of what Rockstar Games recently pulled off, but it does feel like The Old Country deserves a bit more love from its own creators. We, meanwhile, are eagerly awaiting the moment we witness the rise of the legendary Cosa Nostra.
