The Symbolism Behind GTA 6 Release Date

Exactly one year from now, we’ll be playing GTA 6. (Of course, that’s if there isn’t another delay). And by then, we probably won’t have the time to reflect on the symbolism of May 26. But it seems like the developers didn’t pick that date at random.

Bonnie and Clyde, the infamous bank robbers whose story helped inspire the game’s narrative, were buried just one day apart — Clyde Barrow on May 25, and Bonnie Parker on May 26, 1934. The release of Grand Theft Auto VI will likely happen at midnight, falling right between those two dates.

Another date that comes to mind, also tied to death, is May 26, 2022. That was the day Ray Liotta passed away. The renowned Hollywood actor famously voiced the protagonist of GTA: Vice City. For many fans, the voice of Tommy Vercetti remains one of the most iconic in the series’ history.

There’s also a lyric from Red by Daniel Lanois, part of the official Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack:
Seven months gone and seven years to go
It references the first game’s epilogue, which takes place seven years after the second’s, and might also allude to the superstition about seven years of bad luck following a broken mirror. Coincidentally or not, seven years and seven months after the release of RDR 2 lands precisely on May 26, 2026. Not just a beautiful date, but a mysterious, symbolic, and sacred one.
Ironically, it also falls just one day before the 27th — a date around which fans have built an entire theory.
