We’ve been warned about all kinds of horrors on Friday the 13th, but the scariest came in the form of news about paid subscription price hikes for console owners.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s President and CEO, Hideaki Nishino, publicly announced an upcoming price increase for PlayStation Plus. This change is attributed to the growing popularity of the Extra and Premium (also known as Deluxe) tiers. According to a recently published report, 38% of all prepaid subscribers are now opting for the most expensive options. The gaming division of the company claims it wants to “increase the value” of the service to justify the higher prices, which will now affect all countries — Canada experienced this change back in April. However, Sony has not provided any details on how exactly this added value will be delivered. As for Microsoft, they’ve remained silent for now — but they don’t seem keen on falling behind the competition. A line of code found on the Xbox Cloud Gaming website hints at an upcoming price increase. There are no specific details yet, but it’s reasonable to assume the change is coming soon. The last time Xbox Game Pass prices went up was a year ago.
In light of this news, it might be wise to consider extending your subscription for a longer period — a full year, for instance — if you’re a regular user of these services.
