GTA 6 in PlayStation Store: Game Promotion, Release Date, and Exact Launch Time

Since the reveal of the second trailer, screenshots, illustrations, and other materials, a page for GTA 6 has appeared on the PlayStation Store, where users can view general information about the game and add it to their wishlist. It’s been a month and a half already, yet nothing similar has been done in the Microsoft Store, even though the Xbox Series X/S version was announced alongside the PS5 version.

GTA 6 shot straight to the top charts of the PlayStation Store — even without pre-order availability.

This is likely due to the partnership agreement between Rockstar Games and Sony, which was discussed some time ago. It involves special marketing treatment for Grand Theft Auto VI on the Japanese platform, which manifests in various ways. Trailer 2 was specifically recorded on a PlayStation 5, a fact that was highlighted separately. On the digital store’s website, the anticipated blockbuster is prominently featured, while it’s completely absent from competing platform.

Interestingly, if you open the page on a console or via the mobile PS App, at the end of the first trailer — released back in December 2023 and announcing 2025 as the release window — you can now see an updated date. This reassures some fans, convincing them that there will be no further delays. Although, once a date has been changed, it can always be changed again — twice, even three times, if necessary.

Another curious detail is visible on the web version of the page. It now shows the exact release time. Moreover, this time was updated after the fact, so it can be considered reliable — not just a placeholder (which it likely was originally). According to the regions listed, access will open at 12:00 AM, from May 25 to May 26. This means the release will be gradual — unlocking as the clock strikes midnight in each time zone. So lucky players in New Zealand and some Oceanic islands will be the first to officially play GTA VI. However, Xbox owners have the option of changing settings to join them early.

Of course, this type of release means a flood of spoilers for those waiting their turn. And it’s not just a matter of a few hours, but potentially several days — since the game could be leaked early, just like GTA 5 was. A simultaneous worldwide release would be more logical, like what they now do for GTA Online updates, where time doesn’t matter. But that would mean a much later launch for some people — close to the end of the day, even. RDR 2 also had a staggered release.

But why Tuesday? Tuesday has traditionally been the day for new game releases, ever since November 24, 1992, when the world saw Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The second day of the week was convenient for many reasons: shipments arrived before the weekend, retail staff had time to prepare, and it was easier to track sales figures. Developers also had weekdays ahead to patch bugs and issues quickly. However, many of these reasons are no longer as relevant in the age of digital releases. Some companies stick to tradition, others now aim for different days — like Friday, when most people finish work and can dedicate the weekend to a new release. That’s the plan for Mafia: The Old Country, debuting August 8. But GTA 6 doesn’t really need to adjust to the world — people adjust to it. Many are already booking time off work or vacations (maybe you should start thinking about that too).
