Phantom Car in GTA Online

In October 2021, to celebrate Halloween, GTA Online introduced a new random event, during which players could be attacked by a killer car. It was only active during select bonus weeks: • 43/2021 • 44/2021 • 44/2022 • 42/2023 • 43/2023 • 44/2023 • 44/2024 • 45/2024 • 39/2025 • 40/2025 • 41/2025 • 42/2025

Conditions for Appearance

The sudden appearance of a mysterious car could easily startle unprepared players — but for it to happen, several conditions had to be met:

• to be outside in a session with two or more players (the more people in the session, the lower the chance of encountering Phantom Car; two players in a session gives a 50/50 chance — and if they stick together, it’s guaranteed);
• to be on foot or in a regular vehicle (not a weaponized, special, air, or water vehicle);
• have spent at least 16 minutes of real time in the session (which equals about 8 in-game hours);
• the time of day had to be night — between 9:00 PM and 5:00 AM.

The Event and Its Consequences

You don’t need to stay in any particular area — Christine can appear anywhere. However, Legion Square in central Los Santos is often recommended as a good waiting spot.

If you’re in a vehicle, Phantom Car will begin to chase you. Once you get out, the hellish machine bursts into flames and tries to run you over. If it makes contact, the player also catches fire — it ignores all other characters. The event ends if another random event begins, if you manage to escape, or if only one remains in the encounter. Destroying Christine isn’t too hard — explosives work especially well.
