Rockstars Open the Gates of Hell in Discord

In yesterday’s newsletter to select fan sites, Rockstar Games staff included a link to their official Discord server. Within seconds, thousands of users flooded in. As of now, roughly 18 hours after its launch, the server already has 120,000 members.

Among the channels, there are groups for finding teammates in GTA Online and Red Dead Online, as well as threads dedicated to GTA 6 and RDR 1. But the most surprising part? There’s no moderation. This means an unimaginable flood of all kinds of messages — from questions about the Trailer 2 (sometimes answered by AI-powered bots) to inappropriate content, racism, and all the usual “joys” of Discord space.

The only clear benefit of this situation is the release of a stunning illustration that pays close attention to studio’s rich video game history.

The community has mixed reactions to developers’ move. Some believe this marks the unofficial start of GTA VI marketing campaign (or at least an unusual part of a broader promotional strategy). Others suspect the server is fake — arguing that official representatives wouldn’t allow such chaos — or that it was an accidental leak (though in that case, R* would likely have shut it down by now). According to information found on the server, it was actually created in mid-summer last year, while company’s account itself was registered in 2019.
