Results of the Transition from GTA 5 Legacy to Enhanced

For the first two weeks after the update of the PC version of GTA 5, the developers worked hard to improve the gaming experience and released five patches totaling several gigabytes. However, Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced still became the lowest-rated entry in the series on Steam. Just over half of the 28,000 reviews are positive, resulting in a mixed rating. Of course, this situation may change in the future — after all, Legacy now has nearly 90% approval with two million reviews over ten years. But why does it seem like the community is dissatisfied?

At first glance, the developers introduced graphical improvements that genuinely enhanced the visuals of a game that is almost 12 years old. Moreover, all of this was offered for free — no payment was required for the update. However, it remains unclear why Rockstar Games decided to split the game into two versions. This decision caused a lot of inconveniences. First, only one save from the story mode can be transferred. Second, there were numerous issues with the new Online. Third, Script Hook V is useless in Enhanced (though its creator has mentioned that he is working on a fix).

Wouldn’t it have been simpler to implement all the proposed features into the classic build as optional settings, which could be enabled or disabled based on PC configuration? And why leave part of the GTA Online audience without content and features that were previously exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S? That way, players wouldn’t have to deal with all these transfer complications and potential separation of friends who used to play together but are now scattered for various reasons. Now, they also worry whether R* might decide to shut down the old Online version alongside the PS4 and Xbox One editions.

Instead of limiting achievements to Enhanced in the Epic Games Store, they could have been added to Legacy as well. There are no technical issues preventing this — only the developers’ willingness. Another minor but undeniably annoying detail is that switching to the second build in Steam and EGS resets the played hours counter to zero. A small issue, but an unpleasant one.

1,206 hours (or 50 days) in GTA 5. And here is one and a half days less of playtime.

Fragmentation also affects the game’s statistics. According to SteamDB, both versions of Grand Theft Auto V remain in the top 15 most-played games, but as a single version, it held a stable spot in the top five.

At first glance, these seem like minor details, but together they create a bigger picture, making one wonder: why reinvent the wheel? Just think — this is the fifth edition of GTA 5 in eleven and a half years.
