Fake: GTA 6 Water Physics Cost a Colossal Amount

Various social media profiles and even some gaming media outlets are spreading information that allegedly $200 to $300 million was spent on creating realistic water in GTA 6. They write that Rockstar Games supposedly has a dedicated team of 20 people working only on this. And also, that the game will feature surfing, hurricanes, floods, as well as dynamic tides.

Well, this is yet another fake created just to grab views. In several places the source is referred to as a “well-informed journalist Aleix Ventura”, who simply does not exist. We found the account where it all started. And of course, no source of the information is mentioned there.

The original source of today’s fake news.

Some of it may turn out to be true. But that’s how it often is with different “rumors” that are nothing more than random guesses. “Make up enough, and something will come true”. It’s very likely that tidal phenomena will be implemented — this can be seen in a couple of official screenshots.

In the city in Grassrivers, some buildings stand on water. On the piles you can see the water level before low tide. In Mount Kalaga National Park, there are river signs for measuring water level.

As for everything else, there are solid reasons for doubt. While floods are becoming more frequent in Miami, hurricanes in this area are relatively rare. Besides, calculating how both phenomena would affect an open world is extremely problematic. Remember, people also wrote about earthquakes in GTA 5, but that turned out to be fiction. As for surfing, it’s not very popular in Florida’s largest city due to the type of waves there, so it’s unlikely to appear in the game.

The quoted sums also make little sense. If the estimated budget is indeed $1–2 billion (one for development, the other for marketing), then 20% went to water physics? Of course, water will be an important part of Grand Theft Auto VI — it’s used for drug transportation, fishing, diving, and kayaking, and we hope boats will receive a proper modification system. But still, with $200–300 million you could make a separate AAA title.
